I think I have everything I need here now, though I'm not 100% happy with the wording in some places..

Name: Rook
Age: 43 (Human form appears about 20)
Sex: Male
Height:
Human: 5' 7" | Demon: Variable; default at 5' 5"
Weight:
Human: 121 lbs | Demon: Variable; Ranges from feather-light to 90 lbs

Rank: Rookie
Element: Fire
Partnering Human: N/A

Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Very aware of his surroundings; difficult to sneak up on;
+ Calm; Level-headed; Very practical;
+ Good stamina/endurance; Has a damn strong kick;
+/- Keeps most of his feelings and thoughts to himself; Quiet, but not anti-social;
- Doesn't trust others easily; Doesn't know when to ask for help; Can hold one hell of a grudge;
- Claustrophobic (not in crowds, however); Will never admit this to anyone;
- Gets restless if he isn't allowed to do anything;

Species:
Enenra. (For lack of a better real-world comparison)
They are mysterious, two-limbed creatures that are shrouded in a small cloud of thick, colored smoke, with glowing eyes hidden behind their masks.
An Enenra's mask is, in fact, a large part of their existance. Each demon's mask is unique, like a human's fingerprint, and come in all different sizes, shapes, and materials (though wood is the most common. These are much more durable than they look.)
Removing their mask results in several things: Firstly, they shrink down considerably, as their outer shroud of smoke vanishes, and their biological/corporeal form changes to replace it, leaving them with very little body mass. Secondly, their vision becomes impaired and blurry; they can still feel their way around, but it is disorientating to them and leaves them vulnerable. Thirdly, it significantly hinders their ability to absorb and digest food and nutrients in any sort of efficiant manner, which can lead to starvation if they remain in this form for too long.
Now, they can remove the masks on their own, for times when being intangible is a favorable ability. It also allows them to become light enough to hitch a ride on a breeze, allowing them to flee from any sort of danger. They are creatures of flight, rather than fight.
Of course, removing the mask also includes the risk that it may be damaged, possibly beyond repair, leaving them stranded in their incorporeal forms. And if the mask is completely destroyed (typically via cremation) they will cease to exist entirely. Forcibly removing their masks is difficult, but not impossible. If someone does manage to get close enough, they face the threat of suffocating in the smoke. And if you can get past that, they still have a very strong kick/headbutt to defend themselves.
Most people avoid them for these reasons, but some will go out of their way to collect, bottle and sell the prettier-colored ones on the black market as a sort of 'exotic' decor or claim that they are Jinn/genies and can grant wishes if set free.

Human Form/Extra:
*Thanks to some less-than-gentle handling over the years, Rook's mask has a few cracks and imperfections. This translated over to his human form as the scars on his face. And, though it's not shown, he is also missing one of his bottom teeth in the same spot as the scar.
*In his human form, Rook isn't required to wear the mask, as he can no longer become incorporeal by not wearing it. However, it is still needed if he returns to his Demon form, so he is still quite protective of it.
*Enenra all have rather distinct smells, ranging from bad ones (like burnt rubber) to good ones (like candles or incense). Rook has the scent of a campfire clinging to him, though it fades considerably in his human form.
*Enenra can consume and absorb just about anything flamable for food/fuel, though they all prefer plant matter, and their 'metabolism' allows them to go long periods of time without eating if they eat a big enough meal. In his human form, Rook is still able to eat things that regular humans can't, like wood and plants, but has a higher metabolism.
*If injured in his human form, both blood and smoke will seep out of the wounds.

History:
Rook doesn't like to talk much about his past; he only says it was really boring before he was first stuffed into a bottle a few years back, and even that wasn't all that eventful besides the few times said bottle got passed around to different owners.

Prompt:

Well. This had definitely been an eventful night.

The most eventful night Rook'd had in years, actually,compared to what little else ever happened to him. He still wasn't quite sure what exactly had happened. One minute he had been stuck in a bottle in his usual coma of boredom, the next minute the bottle was suddenly moving very quickly, carried by an unfamiliar figure. At first he hadn't thought anything of it- he had been shifted around a little a number of times since he had arrived.

But the then there had been a crash of glass against the pavement and suddenly there had been a lot more room than before. He had nearly fled the second he realized he was no longer trapped, but he had sensed his mask nearby just in time to rethink that decision. Once he had gotten it on, he managed to get a nice long look at his rescuer.

The human certainly hadn't seemed like the demon-rescuer type. But he had been calm and had held up his hands, asking him to hear him out. When Rook didn't immediately run off or kick the human away, he'd taken it as the cue to continue. In reality, Rook had just been debating which action to take, but before he could decide, something that human mentioned had caught his attention. Bonding.

He listened carefully, curiosity getting the better of him. Now, the thought of being stuck with a human forever wasn't an appealing one, he would admit, but there were always loopholes in these sorts of things. It was just a matter of finding them.
What really interested him, however, was the idea of a getting a different body out of it. Specifically, one that wouldn't be so easy to shove into a bottle. Now that. That had sounded promising.

======

My whole thought process throughout the making of this character was basically:

"Wow wouldnt a smoke demon be cool/ Wait they need biological bits ok here have magic masks that do that/ woah wait what if you take if off/ I guess they just go full-smoky/ wait what if they got trapped in bottles or something/ wow being a smoke demon would suck actually/ better make them flightly and avoid potential threats like the plague/ hey that could be why this guy wants to bond so he can get a less shitty body that can't get shoved into bottles/ yes this could work wait oh god how long has it been 4 AM"
